GCU History

Greenwood Credit Union has a long history of providing high quality financial services to individuals and families throughout Warwick, Kent County, the State of Rhode Island and beyond.  Founded in 1948, Greenwood Credit Union has always shown a strong commitment to the financial well-being of the families, businesses and communities that we serve.

Over the years Greenwood Credit Union has shown steady positive growth and is now over $400 million in total assets and continuing to grow.  We have always strived to provide the highest interest rates to our depositors while maintaining extremely competitive rates on our loan products. This delicate balance has proved to be a key to the success of the credit union, not only financially but more importantly from a member satisfaction perspective.

Greenwood Credit Union strikes again at the Credit Unions of RI “Strike for Gold” Bowling Tournament

GCU joined 10 other RI credit unions and industry partners on March 29, 2017 to support the Special Olympics of RI and it was a huge success!

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the tournament and we could not be more proud to have been a part of it. This annual event provides the opportunity to foster team spirit, bring the credit union community together, and support the mission of Special Olympics.

We are very proud to announce that, collectively, our 3 Greenwood Credit Union bowling teams raised just under $7,000 for the Special Olympics of RI – with one of our teams receiving 2nd place honors in the top fundraiser category!

It was a truly rewarding experience!
A great time for a great cause!

Thank you!

Thanks to all who supported this very worthy cause!
We couldn't have done it without you!

The generosity of GCU’s employees, network of members and vendors contributed to a record breaking $31,000 raised for the event!

Greenwood Credit Union Receives
National Recognition;
Members Benefits Outstanding Service Award

Warwick, RI—Warwick, RI-based Greenwood Credit Union (GCU) is proud to announce that it has been honored by the Credit Union National Association, Inc. (CUNA) for being among the nation’s best in providing direct financial benefits to members. “These benefits arise from GCU’s low loan interest rates, higher-than average deposit yields, and also from the practice of imposing fewer or lower fees compared to banking institutions, “ says Cheryl Sorenson, Manager, Conference and Meetings, CUNA Councils. According to CUNA estimates, based on information recently supplied by the GCU staff, Greenwood Credit Union delivers a direct benefit of $252 per member household.

Joe Lajoie, Chief Financial Officer for GCU, was on hand at the 2013 CFO Council Conference in Phoenix, to receive the Member Benefits Outstanding Service Award on behalf of Greenwood Credit Union, in recognition of this achievement.

“I always thought GCU did more for its members than any other financial institution, and it’s nice to have an independent validation from CUNA. We rank first among credit unions under $400 million, and we are proud of that record as well as of the recognition,” comments Mr. Lajoie.

(L-R); Accepting the Award at the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Conference Luncheon on behalf of GCU, is Chief Financial Officer, Joe Lajoie, with Jeanne Sheahan, Director of Research Services, Credit Union National Association

Fall 2017

Message from the President. As family vacations and the leisurely days of summer are coming to an end, along with the last few hot days, we’re anticipating the changes that Fall brings. New Englanders welcome the return of bright foliage while adjusting to a new, yet familiar, schedule that typically includes a school calendar, heavier work agendas, and various home preparations and improvements. At Greenwood, we too are settling into our familiar routines.

Message from the President. The temperature isn’t all that’s heating up right now. The home ownership rate is recovering, and there are many first-time home-buyers entering the market. This is exciting because many would-be buyers were shut out of the market in the ten years following the housing crash. We’ve always worked closely with our members to help them with their first - or their next mortgage. Rates are still favorable, and it’s a good idea to start the pre-approval process to avoid delays once you do find the home of your dreams.

Message from the President. Spring is a wonderful time of year — people can feel the warmer weather and the rebirth of the landscape. After our recent snow squalls, the changing season looks and feels more promising right now. It is good to anticipate warmer sunshine, pleasant temperatures and green grass.

Message from the President. My first month at Greenwood Credit Union has been both hectic and rewarding. The people at GCU certainly live up to their reputation as warm, friendly and welcoming. My special thanks go out to retiring President, Jim Irving for all his help during my transition. His support, and the graciousness
extended to me by both the employees and GCU’s board of directors, has made me feel comfortable and welcome.
