Stay-Cay – Rhode Island Style!
From shining seashore to lush green mountains, New England certainly has its share of exciting vacation destinations, and Rhode Island has so many of these awesome things to do and see that are easily accessible in day trips. Here is our list of fun places, some you’d expect to see, some maybe you hadn’t heard of – yet!
Newport Mansions, Restaurants & Thames Street
Experience the Gilded Age for yourself and see where they filmed the show – among others – at the majestic seaside “cottages” built over a century ago by Americas original rich and famous. Family memberships to the Preservation Society can make it cost-effective by offering unlimited visits for a whole year. Newport also has great restaurants for every budget featuring everything from lobster rolls by the sea to fine dining. And no trip is complete without a shopping stroll down legendary Thames street!
Green Animals Topiary Garden – Portsmouth
Walk through this spectacular garden and marvel at the skill it takes to create animals out of hedges. In addition to more than 80 topiaries, Green Animals is home to a remarkable array of flowering bulbs, perennials, annuals and shrubs that bloom colorfully throughout the spring, summer and fall. This Narragansett Bay attraction is often overlooked, so be sure to add it to your staycation bucket list.
The Mud at Mohegan Bluffs – Block Island
Hop a quick, fun ferry from Point Judith and you’re on Island Time! When you arrive, take in the breathtaking views by two-wheeling around the island on mopeds or bicycles. Ride to Mohegan Bluffs and experience an all-natural “spa treatment.” Cover your skin with the green clay from the cliffs, and then rinse in the ocean.
WaterFire – Providence
Visitors of all ages will enjoy this evening filled with world music, performers, and a river illuminated with floating fire. A Providence staple, events are held throughout the year, but be sure to check the schedule and attend a full lighting to get the complete experience.
Foodie-ing – Rhode Island
New England has many food oddities, but Rhode Island has a list that stands on its own. In fact, there’s so many delicious items, you may need to make a separate Stay-Cay list just for searching them out! Stuffies, Del’s lemonade, zeppole, doughboys, pizza strips, coffee milk and clam cakes are must-trys, and must-revisits if you haven’t had them since you were a kid! You are bound to see them on a menu or two—cross them off as you go. You can knock off a bunch of items on the Rhode Island Red Food Tour in Newport.
